The figurative expression ‘knight in shining armour’ refers back to the notion of gallant knights saving fair maidens in distress. In print, the expression can be found in a poem as far back as 1790. Armour worn especially by royalty and the high nobility was very polished and shone with splendour – not quite the same look as a retard in tin foil.
